Rivalry Weekend in Patriot League Men's Hoops

Two of the Patriot League's premier rivalries highlight the weekend men's basketball slate, which also includes a pair of contests that are rematches from last year's League Tournament. The action includes nationally-televised games on ESPNU on both Saturday and Sunday, with American and Holy Cross facing off from Worcester on Saturday at 2 p.m. and service academies Navy and Army playing at West Point on Sunday at Noon.

Lehigh and Lafayette open the weekend when they face off in Easton on Saturday at 1 p.m. The home team has won the last five games in the series. The Eagles and Crusaders tip one hour later from Worcester as they meet for the first time since American earned a tightly contested 62-60 win at home in last year's Patriot League quarterfinals. Colgate and Bucknell complete Saturday's action with a 7 p.m. game in Lewisburg. The Raiders beat the Bison, 54-40, in Hamilton to advance to last year's Patriot League Championship.

Navy and Army complete the slate with Sunday's contest. The schools have split the last 10 meetings, and have split the regular-season series in each of the last five seasons. Army has won the first matchup of the year in each of those five campaigns.

Home Teams Win on Wednesday

Home cooking was in full effect on Wednesday night, with Navy, Bucknell and Colgate all earning wins on their own court in Patriot League men's basketball action.

The Mids pulled into a tie for second place in the League standings with Holy Cross by knocking off the Crusaders, 74-68, in Annapolis. Bucknell notched its first Patriot League victory of the season with a 71-61 triumph over Lafayette. Colgate picked up its first home win of the year by beating Lehigh, 58-45.

American and Army were off on Wednesday, as the Eagles are now the only remaining unbeaten team in League play.

Plenty of Television Coverage Over the Weekend

All four Patriot League men's basketball games will be broadcast by a national or regional outlet over the weekend. Two games will be shown through the League's package with ESPNU, with American visiting Holy Cross on Saturday and Navy at Army on Sunday. Lehigh and Lafayette will renew their rivalry on the Lafayette Sports Network on Saturday afternoon, while the Colgate at Bucknell game will be broadcast by SPORTSFever TV and will air on tape delay on Sunday at 7 p.m. on WQMY (MyTV in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre market).

American/Holy Cross Part of Campus Connection Week

The American/Holy Cross contest on Saturday comes on the final day of ESPNU's Campus Connection week. The extra features include graphics on student-athletes, play-by-play calls from Holy Cross' student radio broadcast and additional enhanced coverage for the student-athletes.

Early Trends In Patriot League Action

Last year's Patriot League season featured plenty of close calls and success for visiting teams, but the 2008-09 season has not started down the same path. Home teams have a 10-5 record through the first 15 League games, and 11 of those contests have been decided by 10 points or more. More games have been decided by 20 points or more (three) than five points or less (two).

American Off to First 3-0 Start

American earned its first Patriot League title last season, and the Eagles have kept the good times rolling by getting off to their first 3-0 start in Patriot League play this year. The Eagles are in their eighth season as a League member. American has won seven consecutive games against Patriot League teams counting last year's Tournament, and has beaten every team but Navy during that stretch. American's current six-game win streak is tied for ninth-longest nationally.

Navy Remains Perfect at Home

Navy extended its perfect home record to 9-0 with a 74-68 win over Holy Cross on Wednesday. The nine-game home winning streak is tied for the second-longest in Navy annals. The Mids are one of 37 Division I teams that still have an undefeated record at home, and one of only 17 of those teams whose undefeated record consists of at least nine victories (through Wednesday's games).

Patriot League's Top Road Teams Go For Wins This Weekend

Four teams account for 21 of the 27 road wins by Patriot League squads, and each will try to earn another victory away from home over the weekend. American leads all Patriot League teams with six road wins, making the Eagles one of only 15 teams in the country with at least six road victories this season (through Wednesday's games). Colgate, Lehigh and Navy all follow with five road wins.

Navy's Kina Joins Exclusive Company

Navy senior guard Kaleo Kina has put himself in rare air in the Patriot League record books throughout the 2008-09 season. He became just the fifth student-athlete in League annals to earn three consecutive Player of the Week honors in December, and later became the seventh honoree to receive the award four times in a season. Now, Kina joins an even less populated group. He recently became the third Patriot Leaguer with at least 1,300 points, 400 rebounds, 300 assists and 150 steals in a career. Kina joins Lafayette's Brian Ehlers (1996-00) and Holy Cross' Kevin Hamilton (2002-06) as players to accomplish the statistical feat.

Patriot League Back On ESPNU

The Patriot League will have completed four of its six appearances on ESPNU after the weekend's action. The remaining games on ESPNU are Colgate at American on Feb. 14 and Lafayette at Lehigh on Feb. 22.
